The Grades 1’s have been traveling in time to learn about the building of the Canadian Railway and discovering parts of British Columbia’s history.

The students learned that many immigrants worked together to create a very vibrant and diverse society. The students then worked cooperatively in groups to further improve their English language skills while using connector sets that required assembly. This active learning assists students to gain valuable skills and insights.

This is one way that students demonstrate their understanding of the Scientific Process. As in scientific tradition, she made a prediction, followed a procedure, and will wait to see if the data results are what she predicted.

The Grade 3 – 5 class reads with the JK Galileo class every Friday morning.

The buddy reading allows the older children to connect to the younger students by telling stories, answering questions, and reading favorite stories they all find enjoyable. Many are working toward improving their English language skills and this is just one activity among several that combines social and reading skills.

Colour Symphony

What To Do:

1. Carefully pour the milk into the tray so that it just covers the bottom.

2. Add about 6-8 drops of different colored food coloring onto the milk in different spots.

3. Add about 5 drops of the liquid soap onto the drops of food coloring and watch the show.

How Does It Work?

When we drop the liquid soap onto the tray, it tried to break down the fat in the milk. While it was doing that, it caused the colors to scatter and mix creating a very colorful display.

Teen Board: Quantity and Symbols in Base 10

Aim: To associate the teen numerals (11~19) with the quantity (10s + 1s)

Presentation:

1. Place the wooden boards vertically one beneath the other.

2. Combine ten bars and coloured bead bars to make quantity (11~19).

3. Make the appropriate numerals on the Teen.
